Founded by Kate Smaller, Phd

BACKGROUND

Dr. Kate Smaller is a PhD-trained clinical social worker with over 15 years of experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy. Rooted in the values of social work and the depth of psychoanalytic thought, her career has been dedicated to helping individuals heal from the inside out—through meaningful, lasting change.

Her work is guided by the belief that every person holds an untapped forward edge—a part of the self that longs to grow, connect, and thrive, even in the face of fear or pain. Starting from this assumption, Kate has witnessed powerful transformations in those she’s worked with—from gang-involved teens and women in shelters to survivors of sexual assault and private practice clients.

Over the past decade, Kate and her husband and colleague, Dr. Mark Smaller, have expanded and refined the Forward Edge Theory—originally developed by Heinz Kohut and Marian Tolpin—translating its rich, abstract ideas into accessible language and conducting research to make the approach more usable for clinicians everywhere.

vision for h1 therapy

Kate’s vision for H1 Therapy grew from a desire to reimagine what therapy can and should be: relational, respectful, and grounded in the full complexity of being human. H1 was built not just as a therapy practice, but as a movement—one that honors each person’s inner world and challenges the oversimplified, medicalized view of mental health. Her goal is to thoughtfully and continuously expand H1 Therapy, making the depth of this work accessible to more people and communities.

additional programs

In addition to her clinical work, Kate brings this approach to life through writing, public speaking, and innovative programs like Besties² and Super Girl Summer Camp, which translate her theory into accessible, empowering experiences. Whether through therapy, research, or community-based initiatives, her purpose remains the same: to help people reconnect to their truest selves—and move forward with strength, clarity, and hope.
